10 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT STUDYING

The desire to succeed has been identified as one of man’s greatest need. Little wonder people pull in their best to achieve a measure of success.

In the business world, there is a continuous struggle for a fair portion of the market as it becomes increasingly hard for any to attain a retentive stage in this “global village”(Marshall Mcluhan 1964).

Students are not left out in this struggle as they strive to get good grades. Although critics have argued that good grades doesn’t determine success in the market world, it has been observed that ones who study hard  for their grades are appreciated.

Good study habits are therefore important to achieve good grades and also make good use of acquired knowledge.

You may find the following tips helpful:
1. Understand your make up. No two humans are completely the same  so we learn under different circumstances. You need to take time to study yourself. Try to identify how quickly you are able to assimilate things and in what condition. There is no set age for self actualisation but the earlier, the better.

2. Be a good listener. Being a good listener is very important as you work only on what is stored. You need to store correct information hence there is need to pay attention. Listen to the teacher, listen to the lines of a text. What exactly are they conveying? Do not be quick to skip. Rather, take your time and get the gist.

3. Start early. It is better to start studying at the beginning of a course rather than waiting till it gets bulky. Trust me, you would get choked. Do not postpone reading so you can take it bit by bit.

4. Ask questions where not clear

5. Be at the right environment. Remember we had said understanding your make up is an essential step to good study habits. In the same vein, you should study in a conducive environment. That term is relative as individuals differs. But it would be best to maintain a quiet zone .

6. Make jottings. Highlight key words in a text you hope to remember. You could write them on a sheet so you could review later. But be careful of abbreviations because you might get shocked when there is retrieval failure.  It would be better you keep short notes and relate points to familiar things.

7. Draw. Yes it is helpful to paint visual images of concept learnt. It must not be beautiful buy the main point is you understanding what you have painted.

8. Teach others. Tell others about what you have learnt. This would help to avoid a situation where you do not easily recall

9. Review your notes. Always go through your notes, tabs and drawings before any exam. Visit your jottings and work on questions related to the course if available. Where not available, try to formulate questions.

10. Be Confident. Yes believe you can do it. Tension is normal when faced with exams. But it can be managed. Remember you have prepared for this. It is also important to take short breaks during reading and sleep at least 3 hours before an exam.

Study indeed can be refreshing when you follow some of the tips mentioned above. Developing a good study habit is necessary for better academic performance  and for resourceful living.
